Welcome to COST Action "Magnetic Particle Imaging"

a pioneering initiative focused on advancing the rapidly emerging field of MPI, a non-invasive, cutting-edge biomedical imaging technique. This technique holds enormous potential for clinical diagnosis, therapy, and monitoring treatment outcomes—capabilities that other imaging methods cannot offer.

MPI uses non-toxic magnetic nanoparticles and operates without ionizing radiation, providing a safe and detailed imaging experience. The technology allows for real-time, quantitative imaging, revealing critical information such as the location and concentration of nanoparticles, their flow state, binding state, local viscosity, and temperature. Moreover, MPI’s ability to capture supralinear information by using nanoparticles with distinct properties sets it apart. When functionalized, these nanoparticles can be utilized for innovative theranostic approaches, combining diagnostics and therapy in a single system.

As MPI continues to evolve, it holds great promise for revitalizing nanomedicine—a field that has yet to fully realize its potential. Early implementations of MPI in preclinical settings have already shown remarkable progress, including applications in oncology, stem cell research, vascular imaging, neuroimaging, lung perfusion, and even imaging of the heart. The technology is also being explored for its potential in tracking inhaled aerosols, conducting on-the-spot biopsies, and more.

COST Action “Magnetic Particle Imaging” is dedicated to creating the first European network of MPI scientists—physicists, chemists, biologists, engineers, clinicians, and other experts—who work across hospitals, academic institutions, and small and medium enterprises. With fewer than 10 MPI systems currently available in Europe, our network aims to increase access to this powerful technology, foster collaboration among the growing MPI community, and position Europe as a global leader in MPI research and development. Through our efforts, we strive to bridge the gap between preclinical discoveries and clinical applications while raising public awareness about the transformative potential of MPI, especially in the realm of nanomedicine.

Join us on this exciting journey as we unlock new frontiers in medical imaging and therapy. Together, we are shaping the future of healthcare with MPI technology.

The NexMPI Action is led by the Management Committee (MC), composed of experts from nanotechnology, physical sciences, chemical sciences, medical engineering, and electrical engineering. These fields are represented across all Working Groups (WGs), ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to research and development. WGs 1-4 focus on scientific advancements, while WG 5 addresses regulatory issues, intellectual property (IPR), dissemination, and education, including outreach to Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITCs) and Young Researchers (YRIs). This structure fosters collaboration, innovation, and the effective translation of Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) research into real-world applications.
